Grad Show

Here are a few shots from my installation at the OCAD Graduation Exhibition! I ended up framing all of my pieces and then pouring resin into the frames, which I felt gave the final pieces an added touch. I created a cottage like installation around them to accompany the natural themes in my work. I was really happy with how everything turned out and had a great weekend showing with some of the most talented artist I know!

I'm finally getting around to updating this darn thing! I've been so busy for the past couple of months I've completely neglected my blog, but now summer is here and things are leveling out I can get back to updating regularly!!!

Here are the final two pieces from my thesis. I was really happy with how these guys turned out and can't wait to make personal work using this technique! The first piece is called Flirting with fall and deals with the sensual magic of the season and the second piece is called Naturebation which I assume is pretty self explanatory ;)

I've got a bunch of new stuff to put up, so make sure to check back often and I'm also currently working on another blog that will be much more fashion oriented so get excited!!!

Here are my finally two pieces for my thesis project! I worked really hard on these guys and got bronchitis in the process but it I suppose it was all worth it because I'm very pleased with how they turned out. The first piece is about a group experience between two girls and an eager flower. I think this is one of my strongest thesis pieces and I had quite a lot of fun drawing their beach girl outfits. On the other hand, there was some debate in class about whether the second piece was depicting a violent sexual act or not. While my intention was to portray a resourceful lumberjack, some of my peers believed it suggested the raping of nature. You'll be able to see my work, along side tons of extremely talented students at the OCAD grad show this may! Here are a few more pieces for my thesis. I feel like I'm finally getting into the swing of things (6 months in!) now I just have to work like mad until may! Both of these guys are done in graphite, scanned and digitally coloured. Both pieces continue with my theme of nature and sexuality. The first image is of a group of girls playing a naughty version of leap frog (the cats tails disappear up their skirts). The second image is of a girl who has gotten herself into quite a bind with some frisky vines.

Here's another piece for my thesis that deals with the parallels between talking to your plants and dirty talk. Many gardeners believe that talking to your plants stimulates growth and keeps the plant healthy. My piece shows a character whispering into a flower while the flower responds with excitement.

This past weekend I took part in a local art fair called Zine Dream! It was lots of fun, despite the lack of sleep I was running on. Late Bloomers is the new zine I made for Zine Dream. It depicts Victorianesque children in the early years of adolescence which are often awkward and isolating. They represent the years in which you are attempting to discover yourself and the constant conflict you experience. Those silver lid things are magnets I made for the show and I also included a picture of my studio wall which Ive begun using as a inspiration bulletin board! That's all for now I think....

OH expect for the fact that thesis is less then a week away!!!! AHHH OMG WOWW ok crunch time!

This is a photo of an installation I did for the release party of the second edition of the Fat City Wildcat publication. I projected a drawing onto a long curtain and created an installation based around the drawing. Its hard to see what exactly is going on, however its suppose to resemble a sort of seance setting. I really enjoyed the idea of projecting my drawing and creating an environment based around the image. It allowed me to delve into a story line, exploring topics and aesthetics I would have other wised bypassed. I hope I have another opportunity to play around with this medium and explore its many possibilities.

I noticed I hadn't done a pointless inspiration post in quite a long time and decided to upload a few of my recent google image favourites...I seem to be going through some sort of black and white phase (please don't try to psychoanalyze why). I'm also not quite sure why I've developed an interest in puppetry, however I just can't seem to get enough of things on sticks or strings. The movie is both terrible and amazing. If you can get past the odd man in a military costume, there's some incredible shadow puppetry that makes me want to quite life and live behind a illuminated sheet. Enjoy my attempt to keep this blog up to date and please trust that real art will come soon!

p.s. The string horses are done by a spectacular french artist named Sandrine Pelletier, her work is unbelievable and disgustingly inspiring!

Here's another piece I did for school. It was based on a pod cast about the idea of time and how it is not fixed but rather malleable according to whose experiencing it. Throughout the pod cast they discuss various scenarios where the traditional sense of time is questioned. At one point, a series of track and field athletes discuss the sensations they feel while running in relation to time. They explain a sense of stillness and how a race can be an "out of body" experience. I ran track and field competitively throughout high school so I jumped at the idea of illustrating an old love of mine.

I've always been intrigued by the natural world and our connection to it. Recently I've been exploring the idea of transforming and how we as humans are constantly evolving, falling apart and becoming something new. I think these pieces are begging to be embroidered!

Kelsey Brookes is an incredible artist that I stumbled upon on Fecal Face. His work is technically impressive, for an artist who only 6 years ago called himself a microbiologist. A year long surfing trip to Australia turned Kelsey onto the idea of making art and by 2005 he left the science industry to pursue a full time career as an artist. Kelsey's work is bitterly sweet and reminds me of what candy land might look like on acid. His ability to juxtapose seemingly innocent element with erotic or even perverted undertones undeniably attractive. Kelsey's work is influenced by Hindu and Buddhist deities, the discovery channel, erotica and quilt (what a mash up!). His beautiful paintings inspire me to work bigger and to never sleep!

With the help of my one of my teacher, I learned that the thread and nail piece I recently did used an old technique called STRING ART. String Art is a technique that was pioneered in the 60's and has now been disregarded as kitschy low brow art. It often focuses on designing geometric shapes and patterns similar to the spirograph. Here are a few pieces that brought shiny stars to my eyes

Here are the photos of my wall piece from the FAT CITY WILDCAT show. It took a little over 40 hours to complete and a few sleepless nights but seeing it all come together was well worth it! This is by far the largest piece I've ever made and I definitely want to continue working at a larger scale. For a girl whose pieces are usually about 8 by 10 inches, a 6 by 7 foot wall space can be daunting. However I really did enjoy the process and was blown away by how rewarding it can feel to see your doodles on a wall!

Due to annoying internet issues earlier this week, I'm running a tad behind in my postings but don't worry, everything is back to normal and I'm ready to chat about a few more spectacular creative’s as promised!

The OMFG artists this week are Amy Brown and Melvin Galapon

Though these folks are on opposite spectrum's artistically, they have both peaked my interest in something new and have encouraged me to step outside the box creatively.

Amy Brown is an illustrator based out of London. She creates playfully naive drawings that make you wish there was a space ship to the land of her brain! However, what really brought stars to my eyes was her colourful king tut short! Her simple yet fun style really got me turned onto the idea of seeing my drawings in motion and gave me the confidence to think it was possible. Here is the wonderful animation and a few examples of her work!

Melvin is a graphic designer who is also based out of London. He creates stunning pieces of design which often use iconographic imagery to comment on contemporary culture. These few images don't do justice to the body of his work, so I highly suggest checking out his website! His beautiful designs continue to tweak my interest in word art and encourages me to keep exploring typography in my own work.

So it's the night before the show and my house is no longer a home but rather a gallery. All of my furniture is packed away into my bedroom. All evidence of my existence is tucked tightly away. Its quite odd to be responsible for others peoples art. Hanging on my walls under my watchful eye, they wait. You can really look at peoples art when your alone with it. You see things that you wouldn't have if they were around. You feel guilty, as if your doing something you shouldn't do, even though their hanging there to be looked at. However, tonight I'll be staring deep into the eyes of my own piece. With over $50 worth of embroidery floss, buckets of nails, a 3 dollar hammer, some old fashioned elbow grease and plenty of caffeine I think I can survive the next 24 hours.

The OMFG artists of the week are Shary Boyle and Cody Cochrane.

I have major girl crushes on these very talented ladies and whats even better then rad girl art...well that is rad girl art by Torontonians! Yup, thats right...these ladies are T.O. natives and they are sure doing a great job of representing Canadian contemporary art!

I certainly suggest you mosey on down to the AGO to check out Boyle porcelain figures which are in the permanent collection as well as check out Cochrane up coming show at Narwhal on December 11!

This is a piece I did for my media class based on the "got milk" campaign. I chose to upload the image without the milk logo so that it could stand alone as an illustration. I don't know what it is about digital illustration that gets me jonesing for anything and everything 90's.....busy prints and tacky colours..... sounds like perfection! This is actually a piece of a larger illustration I did for my best friend Taya's new art publication Fat City Wildcat! It is a book featuring an array of rad Toronto based artists and illustrators and if your in the Greater Toronto Area on December 5 I suggest that you stop by 461 Dundas west for the release party! Here are a few illustrations I made for my digital media class. We were told to design a collectible artist toy and I decided to make this little guy. Hes a mystical space kitty with knack for fortune telling. Despite having what many may describe as a burning hatred for digital illustration, I am quite content with how these turned out. I had a lot of fun playing around with different pattern overlays and colour palette but don't worry, this gal has no intention on giving up the hand any time soon!

This is a piece I did for an assignment on "Guilty Pleasures". We were directed to choose one guilty pleasure and illustrate it. I naturally chose grandma crafts due to my unhealthy fixation on anything knit, stitched or sewn. This little guy is the product of no sleep and chugging lots of tea. After my first legitimate all nighter of the semester, I'm quite content with how everything turned out. I'm especially proud of my little diy rosette studs! Anddd HONESTLY What would a kitschy embroidery be without the wonderful "home sweet home" tag line.

I was recently approached by a hair stylist from Vidal Sassoon who was in search of a model for an upcoming hair shoot. I jumped at the idea of a free cut and colour and was quite excited about getting a few nice photos out of the deal. I'm still waiting for the shots but here are a few photos I took afterwards. I'm quite relieved to see everything come together and I'm really happy with how everything turned out. I'm especially proud of the "sweet nothings" sign I made with my own 2 hands. For an extra little touch I added little hooks to the bottom of the sign to hang my business cards from.

I am constantly saving pretty pictures from my travels throughout the glorious world of cyberspace and decide I should share some of my current favourites. Above are an array of images that have been a source of inspiration in some way or another. I seem to find inspiration within almost anything, however currently I am quite fixated with Victorian children and summer motifs. Mother nature has always been an endless source of creative goodness for me and I am beginning to believe I am destined to migrate to a much warmer climate (who can resist drawing on a sweet summer day?). As you can see, I'm a sucker for pretty girls who frolic outdoors so theres nothing like a topless beauty lounging in a bed of cat tails to get me jonesing for a pencil. Lately, I have also been quite attracted to traditional art from a variety of culture, specifically dutch and native Americans. I find the kitsch quality in a lot of traditional art to be very compelling. Finally, "turn of the century" children's books such as "Sunny rhymes for happy children" by Olive Beaupré Miller are so unbelievably beautiful that who wouldn't burst with creativity when browsing through the antiqued pages. Lately I've been working on channeling all this juicy inspiration into some good old wholesome eye candy, so be sure to keep an eye because new work is on its way!

These are a few pieces I've been working on for my upcoming show which will be held at the Moonbean cafe on St. Andrew st between July 12- Aug 10. I've continued to explore embroidery and have also begun to play with sculpey which has been tons of fun! It's quite exciting to see your character come to life in 3d form!
